Origin & History
Developed in England in the late 1600s and 1700s by crossing native mares with imported Arabian, Barb, and Turkoman stallions, the Thoroughbred was bred specifically for speed and became the foundation of modern flat racing worldwide.
Appearance
Lean, long-legged, and deep-chested, Thoroughbreds are built for maximum speed over distance, with a refined head and an athletic, high-energy carriage.
Temperament
Spirited, athletic, and highly competitive, Thoroughbreds thrive with active work, and off the track are widely retrained as successful eventing, jumping, and dressage horses.
Nearly every registered Thoroughbred worldwide traces its bloodline to just three foundation stallions imported to England over 300 years ago.
Common Uses
Flat racing, and after retirement, eventing, show jumping, and dressage.
